Free care and friendship improve quality of life.
Over the years, the pain had grown worse and worse. Following Robert Middleton's fall that injured his back and foot, pain gradually began to take over his life. The pain began to limit his abilities and steal his concentration, soon forcing him to give up his job as an ASE certified auto mechanic, his shop - and, along with it, his medical insurance. Unable to afford insurance and medical care, he began relying on pain medication, but it provided little relief.
"I was soon withdrawing more and more because it was becoming very difficult to do anything. I was in a constant state of depression with no hope for change," says Robert.
Robert's family stood by him, and with their financial and emotional support, Robert underwent laser back surgery, followed by physical therapy at Brooks. That's where he met therapist Santiago, whom Robert says, "gave me back my life."
"Santiago took a personal interest in me. He knew I didn't have insurance and he didn't judge me. He just wanted me to get better and knew I needed more help to reach my goals. Santiago told me about the Brooks Pain Rehabilitation program for people who have chronic pain," recalls Robert.
With Robert's renewed hope for reclaiming his life from pain, yet a lack of insurance standing in the way, Santiago encouraged him to apply to Brooks for financial assistance to complete his therapy. Brooks' Community Health program funds therapy for the underserved and uninsured, providing help to those like Robert who may otherwise not
have access to quality care.
Robert enrolled in the Pain Rehabilitation program. His doctors lowered the pain medication and applied alternative methods of care including education, psychology, physical therapy, relaxation, diet and exercise. "The program gave me a whole new perspective on life. I reduced the pain medication and learned better ways to deal with stress and anxiety," says Robert. "My quality of life has improved and I am able to do more every day."
"No words can ever express the gratitude I feel for such an incredible team of caring individuals. Brooks made a difference in my life forever."
