Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation
At Brooks, we understand that a spinal cord injury brings forth a sense of uncertainty and confusion in patients and their families. We strive to replace these overwhelming feelings with ones of hope and optimism. In fact, Brooks offers the region’s most comprehensive approach to spinal cord injury rehabilitation, including its only rehabilitation hospital, a full range of outpatient therapies and a highly trained staff with specialized experience in every aspect of the field.
In addition to our 35-year plus legacy of proven rehabilitation expertise, you’ll have access to the latest research innovations for spinal cord injuries and benefit from the genuine passion of our staff. Both resources have a significant and positive impact on the healing process. Our Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and The Joint Commission. Brooks Rehabilitation is one of Florida's only state-designated treatment favilities for brain and spinal cord injuries for children and adults. Our mission is to ensure that you have every opportunity for the best possible recovery. All so you can be you again.
A truly collaborative approach
Our specially trained healthcare professionals carefully evaluate patients while they are still in the acute care hospital. They answer questions and help patients prepare for admittance to Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital. Once at Brooks, you can expect to be cared for by a team of rehabilitation experts. This team includes therapists from several disciplines, rehabilitation nurses and our board-certified physiatrists. Brooks offers the best patient-to-nurse and patient-to-therapist ratios among rehabilitation providers in the region—resulting in better outcomes.
We also believe family is important to recovery. As you begin your therapy, one of the first things we do is educate you and your family about spinal cord injury. Knowing as much as possible better equips you to handle your own personal care. Our nurses and therapists use innovative techniques to teach you about medication, health maintenance, blood pressure, toileting and skin care so you can enjoy greater independence.

The quickest route to being you again
We know that intensive therapy helps patients with spinal cord injuries improve more quickly and function more independently than would otherwise be possible. At Brooks, you’ll receive more personally supervised therapy than you would in other spinal cord injury rehabilitation settings. In fact, each weekday you will receive three or more hours of therapy during your inpatient stay. Therapy is spaced throughout the day with nursing care and breaks at regular intervals. We also provide additional therapy and recreational activities on the weekends. Read more about the range of therapies that Brooks provides.
Your inpatient treatment will take place in our hospital, which was uniquely designed for spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Our aquatic therapy pool is equipped with wheelchair access. The large therapy gym is complete with a kitchen designed to help patients prepare for their return home. Familiar street signs and dramatic murals make you feel at home, but also help with orientation and guidance. The elevators are even equipped with mirrors so wheelchair patients can easily view the space around them.
Highest quality care resulting in the highest success rates
All of our resources are focused on one goal: your independence. Brooks has earned designation by the State of Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCIP) for our inpatient and outpatient spinal cord injury programs. Designated facilities are required to maintain the highest level of expertise and experience to address the medical, rehabilitation and physiological needs of individuals who sustain brain and spinal cord injuries.
Most importantly, we’re getting results. Eighty-six percent of Brooks’ spinal cord injury patients are discharged to their homes, a rate that is significantly higher than national percentages.
A continuum of care
Even when your stay in the hospital is over, Brooks remains committed to helping you grow and succeed with our comprehensive continuum of care.
