Swallowing Disorders Program
Brooks’ Swallowing Disorders Program embraces a multipronged approach to assessment and treatment. Beginning with a clinical evaluation using standardized tools, swallowing function and safety are assessed and a plan of treatment is developed. Assessment may include additional objective techniques such as flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing or Videofluoroscopic Study of Swallow to further define functional impairment and set specific goals. Diet modification, swallowing exercises, training in compensatory strategies for airway safety, and low risk feeding strategies are employed as appropriate to maintain nutrition and hydration. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (Vitalstim), in conjunction with other evidence based dysphagia treatments, are available to help promote muscle strengthening and expedite neurorecovery.
