Throughout 2010 the Brooks Center for Sports Therapy will be hosting various Sports Physical Therapy Courses.
May 1-2, 2010 Developing Post Surgical Rehabilitation for Cervical and Lumbar Spine
Speaker: Carol McFarland PT, MS, OCS
This two day intermediate level course is designed to enhance a therapist’s fundamental understanding of surgical approaches for the cervical and lumbar spine in order to effectively develop progressive rehabilitation protocols. The key to successful post surgical rehabilitation is understanding the mechanism of injury, physiological healing time, mechanical changes, and surgical techniques. This indepth presentation prepares the medical professional to identify effective rehabilitation procedures for safe therapeutic management in order to achieve positive functional outcomes. A thorough understanding of the outcomes of surgery assists the therapist to develop the most effective rehab program. Emphasis is placed on understanding the neuromuscular effects of specific surgical procedures and developing protocols by utilizing neurological assessment tools, manual therapy techniques, and exercise selection for the various post surgical conditions. Extensive handson
lab time and protocol discussion will enable the therapist to immediately apply information in the clinical setting. Learn more about Developing Post Surgical Rehabilitation for Cervical and Lumbar Spine.
November 20-21st A Master Clinician's Approach to Advanced Evaluation and Treatment of the Shoulder Complex
Speaker: George J. Davies DPT, MEd, PT, SCS, ATC, LAT, CSCS, FAPTA
This two-day advanced course provides an indepth analysis of the scientific and clinical Davies 10 rationale for examination and treatment of selected shoulder complex conditions. Over one-third
of this course involves hands-on lab sessions utilizing case studies, clinical reasoning and problem solving skills. A special focus will be on the algorithm-based examination format for the special tests of the shoulder. Updated evidence-based information on sensitivity/specificity and likelihood ratios of the tests will be thoroughly addressed. In addition, selected mobilization techniques, rhythmic stabilization, perturbation techniques, and open and closed chain exercises will be practiced in the laboratory sessions. Discussion of evidence-based rehabilitation will include the optimum exercises for rehabilitation of the shoulder complex, shoulder taping, proprioceptive/kinesthetic training techniques and the scientific basis for plyometrics. Emphasis will be placed on evidencebased practice incorporating the examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment intervention strategies, and clinical outcome studies for patients with selected shoulder conditions.
