About the Keynote Speaker

This year's celebrate independence will feature John F. Crowley, Chairman & CEO of Amicus Therapeutics and inspiration for the major motion picture "Extraordinary Measures."  John, his wife Aileen and their three children, John Jr., Megan and Patrick Crowley have been chasing miracles of modern science. In 1998, Megan and Patrick were both diagnosed with a genetic disease, Pompe disease. This often fatal neuromuscular disorder was so rare that no company had yet developed a medicine to combat it.  John will share his family’s journey as they challenge the medical establishment in a race to find a life saving treatment. CBS Films made a motion picture, Extraordinary Measures, about John and his family which was released in theaters in January, 2010.

Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell star in the movie inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family's future to pursue a cure for his children's life threatening disease. From his working class roots, John Crowley has finally begun to taste success in corporate America. Supported by his beautiful wife Aileen (Keri Russell) and their three children, John is on the fast track. But just as his career is taking off, Crowley walks away from it all when his two youngest children, Megan and Patrick, are diagnosed with a fatal disease. With Aileen by his side, harnessing all of his skill and determination, Crowley teams up with a brilliant, but unappreciated and unconventional scientist, Dr. Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford). Together they form a bio-tech company focused on developing a life-saving drug. One driven to prove himself and his theories, the other by a chance to save his children, this unlikely alliance eventually develops into mutual respect as they battle the medical and business establishments in a fight against the system – and time”.

The Crowley family story is a remarkable one of perseverance, survival and a family’s commitment to do “whatever it takes” against phenomenal odds. It is about courage, hope, learning and love. John and Aileen share their incredible journey in their new family memoir, Chasing Miracles, The Crowley Family Journey of Strength, Hope and Joy, which John will be signing after his presentation. Books will be available for sale in advance in the Brooks Rehabilitation gift shop and will also be available for purchase on the day of the event.
