Bob Rowe

As Director of Clinical Education Bob has been integral not only in his leadership of the Clinical Residency Program but also to the clinical career development of our own staff who often seek him out as mentor and advisor across all disciplines. He has also led the development of our new clinical student education program for PT, OT and SLP. In addition he has been the leading force in bringing top notch internal and external clinical education programs to Brooks. We have been fortunate recipients of Bob's vast clinical knowelege, passion and committment to life long learning.

Dr. Bob Rowe is the Director of Clinical Education at Brooks Rehabilitation located in Jacksonville, FL. In addition to developing and managing the current and future residency/fellowship programs within Brooks Rehabilitation he assists in coordinating and promoting professional development opportunities for the Brooks clinical staff. 

Bob received the Lucy Blair Service Award in 2011.  This award is given annually to APTA members who provide exceptional value to the organization.

Robert H. Rowe (Bob) received his PT degree at LSUHSC in 1985 and completed his Master of Health Science in PT in 1994 also at LSUHSC. He completed an orthopaedic residency through the Ola Grimsby Institute in 1997 and in 1999 he completed an Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy Spine Fellowship also through the Ola Grimsby Institute. In 2001, Bob successfully defended his dissertation and was granted the Doctorate of Manual Therapy through the OGI. In May 2007, Bob completed his t-DPT through MGH IHP.

Bob had an academic appointment with LSUHSC in the Department of Physical Therapy from 1992 to 2006. His responsibilities included teaching in the areas of orthopaedics, manual therapy, biomechanics, electrophysiology, functional anatomy, human anatomy, and exercise dosing. He also participated as a lecturer in several classes for the medical students, residents, and medical fellows within the LSUHSC. Within the LSUHSC School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) he served as a Faculty Assembly Delegate and served as President of the Faculty Assembly from the 2002-2003. He served as a member of the LSUHSC Faculty Senate and was the President-elect at the time of his resignation from LSUHSC.

In April 2000 Bob was invited to become an instructor for the Ola Grimsby Institute (OGI) and served as the OGI's Vice-President of Academic Affairs and as a member of the OGI's Board of Directors until 2006. He has instructed numerous post-professional continuing education courses as a faculty member of the LSUHSC as well as the OGI in the areas of cervical spine evaluation and treatment; lumbar spine evaluation and treatment; clinical application of electrotherapeutic devices; evaluation and treatment of the elbow, wrist and hand; evaluation and treatment of the knee; evaluation and treatment of the ankle and foot; pelvic girdle evaluation and treatment, dosage of therapeutic exercises; and therapeutic treatments of orthopaedic and sports related patients. Bob continues to remain active as a course participant in continuing education courses as well.

Bob has been a member of the APTA/LPTA since his graduation from PT school in 1985. Bob served as the Louisiana Physical Therapy Association (LPTA) Chapters Vice-President from 2004-2006. Within the LPTA Bob served as a member of the Research committee from 1992-2003 and served as the Chair for that Committee from 1997-2003. Bob was one of the founders of the LPTA's Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Special Interest Group and he was the SIG's first President. He served as an LPTA Alternate Delegate in 2000 and then as a Delegate to the APTA's National House of Delegates from 2001 through 2004. Bob also served as the LPTA's Northshore District representative to the Government Affairs Committee. Bob was involved with the LPTA's activities related to achieving direct access particularly related to the negotiations with the Louisiana Chiropractic Association. In 2006, Bob moved to Florida and became a member of the FPTA and in 2007 was elected as a Regional Director, representing the Northern District on the FPTA Board of Directors.

Bob is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association and is a member of the Orthopaedic, Health Policy & Administration, and Education Sections of the APTA. Bob has an appointment on the APTA's Advisory Panel on Practice (APOP) and serves as a site reviewer for the APTA's Residency/Fellowship Credentialing Committee. Bob also serves as a member of the APTA's Manipulation Task Force and served on the APTA Referral for Profit Task Force from 2004-2007. Bob was a member of the Core Committee who developed the APTA Manipulation Education Manual (MEM), which is widely utilized by first professional physical therapy programs by providing guidance regarding manipulative therapy within the programs curriculum. Presently he serves as the Chair of the APTA's Orthopaedic Section Practice Committee and within that role serves as the Orthopaedic Sections liaison to the APTA's Federal Government Affairs, State Government Affairs, and the Reimbursement Department. Bob currently serves as the Orthopaedic Section's Delegate to the APTA's National House of Delegates.

Bob has been an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (AAOMPT) since 1995 and he was recognized as a Fellow of the AAOMPT in 2001. He served as a member of the AAOMPT Standards Committee from 1999-2006 and served as the committee's Co-chair from 2002-2006. Bob was elected to a 3 year term as the organizations Vice-President in 2006 and in addition he served as the Chair of the AAOMPT's Task Force to revise the Manual Therapy Description of Advanced Specialist Practice, which was completed in December of 2007.

Bob retains memberships in the North American Spine Society (NASS) and the American Society of Safety Engineers. He served as one of the team Physical Therapists for the New Orleans Brass hockey team from 1997-2000.

Bob is the author of the Musculoskeletal Chapter in O'Sullivan SB, Siegelman RP, eds. National Physical Therapy Examination Review and Study Guide. 2006 ed. Evanston, IL: International Educational Resources; 2005- 2008. Bob's most current research interests include the investigation of adolescent lifting capacities and there relationship to school book bag weights as well as the relationship of lifting/carrying school book bags to the incidence of low back pain and postural dysfunctions in adolescents. He has presented his research at multiple national APTA Conferences, LPTA Conferences, and at the OGI's Annual Forum (see below).
