As a world-class organization on the cutting edge of evidence-based practice and professional development, Brooks Rehabilitation is proud to offer the first multidisciplinary Geriatric Residency Program in the nation! Eligible practitioners include Rehabilitation Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Speech Language Pathologists. As a geriatric resident in this program, you will be prepared to educate and care for an aging population who is living longer.

In addition to collaborating with the faculty of the Orthopaedic, Neurologic, and Women's Health Residency Programs, the University of Florida and local health care experts, the Geriatric Residency Program is proud to have the following individuals contributing to the success of the Geriatric Residency Program:

Residency Objectives
The Geriatric Residency Program will prepare Residents to serve as:
- Mentors to future residents, colleagues, and students
- Clinical consultants who can assure competent care for elders
- Providers of quality care in a direct access environment and an environment where reimbursement is driven by patient outcomes
- Contributors to the clinical body of knowledge via professional presentations & case study publications
- Leaders in the profession
The Geriatric Residency Program will prepare:
Nursing Residents to successfully obtain a Certification in Gerontological Nursing. Currently, less than 1% of the nation's 2.2 million Registered Nurses are certified in Gerontology. (Source: ANCC- www.nursecredentialing.org)
Occupational Therapy Residents to successfully build a portfolio as required by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) to become Board Certified in Gerontology. As of June 2009, there was one (1) Occupational Therapist board certified in Gerontology in Florida and only 12 in the nation. (Source: AOTA- www.aota.org)
Physical Therapy Residents to successfully pass the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) Certification exam in Geriatrics. As of June 2010, there were 58 Geriatric Clinical Specialists in Florida and only 1,109 in the nation. (Source: www.apta.org)
Speech Therapy Residents to obtain clinical expertise that will be integral in propelling the grassroots efforts of the profession to implement a specialty certification program through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
